Εὐλογητὸς ὁ θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ εὐλογήσας ἡμᾶς
ἐν πάσῃ εὐλογίᾳ πνευματικῇ ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις ἐν Χριστῷ, Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us
in every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

καθὼς ἐξελέξατο ἡμᾶς ἐν αὐτῷ πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἁγίους καὶ ἀμώμους κατενώπιον αὐτοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love.
προορίσας ἡμᾶς εἰς υἱοθεσίαν διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς αὐτόν, κατὰ τὴν εὐδοκίαν τοῦ θελήματος αὐτοῦ, having predestined us to sonship through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the pleasure of his will,
εἰς ἔπαινον δόξης τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ ἧς ἐχαρίτωσεν ἡμᾶς ἐν τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ to the praise of the glory of his grace which he heaped graciously on us in the Beloved One,
ἐν ᾧ ἔχομεν τὴν ἀπολύτρωσιν διὰ τοῦ αἵματος αὐτοῦ, τὴν ἄφεσιν τῶν παραπτωμάτων, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions,

according to the riches of his grace,

ἧς ἐπερίσσευσεν εἰς ἡμᾶς ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ καὶ φρονήσει that he lavished on us in all wisdom and insight,
γνωρίσας ἡμῖν τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ θελήματος αὐτοῦ, κατὰ τὴν εὐδοκίαν αὐτοῦ ἣν προέθετο ἐν αὐτῷ having revealed to us the mystery of his will, according to his pleasure that he purposed in him,
εἰς οἰκονομίαν τοῦ πληρώματος τῶν καιρῶν, ἀνακεφαλαιώσασθαι τὰ πάντα ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ, as a plan for the fullness of the times, to bring together under one head all things in Christ,

the things in heaven and things on earth in him.

ἐν ᾧ καὶ ἐκληρώθημεν in whom we have also received an inheritance,

having been predestined according to the purpose of the one who is working in all things according to the council of his will,

εἰς τὸ εἶναι ἡμᾶς εἰς ἔπαινον δόξης αὐτοῦ τοὺς προηλπικότας ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ· so that we might be to the praise of his glory who first put our hope in Christ,
ἐν ᾧ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας, τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς σωτηρίας ὑμῶν, ἐν ᾧ καὶ πιστεύσαντες in whom you also, having heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom you then believed,

were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

ὅ ἐστιν ἀρραβὼν τῆς κληρονομίας ἡμῶν, εἰς ἀπολύτρωσιν τῆς περιποιήσεως, εἰς ἔπαινον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ. who is the first deposit of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.

Διὰ τοῦτο κἀγώ, ἀκούσας This is why, I also having heard about

your trust in the Lord Jesus

and your love for all the holy ones

οὐ παύομαι εὐχαριστῶν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν Never cease giving thanks for you

making mention of you in my prayers

ἵνα ὁ θεὸς τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ πατὴρ τῆς δόξης, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory

would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.

πεφωτισμένους τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τῆς καρδίας ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ εἰδέναι ὑμᾶς that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you will know

what is the hope of his calling

what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance: the holy ones

καὶ τί τὸ ὑπερβάλλον μέγεθος τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ εἰς ἡμᾶς τοὺς πιστεύοντας and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe

according to the working of the might of his strength ²⁰which he worked in Christ

raising him from the dead

and seating him at his right hand in the heavenly places

ὑπεράνω πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας καὶ δυνάμεως καὶ κυριότητος far above every ruler and authority and power and dominion

and every position that exists, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

καὶ πάντα ὑπέταξεν ὑπὸ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ, And he put all things in subjection under his feet

and gave him as head over all things to the church

ἥτις ἐστὶν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ, τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν πληρουμένου. which indeed is his body, the fullness of the one who is filling all in all.

Καὶ ὑμᾶς ὄντας νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν, And you were dead in your trespasses and sins
ἐν αἷς ποτε περιεπατήσατε in which you once walked

B according to the ruler of the power of the air

the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience

ἐν οἷς καὶ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἀνεστράφημέν ποτε ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις τῆς σαρκὸς ἡμῶν, in which we also all once lived in the passions of our flesh

C according to the choices of the flesh and our reasoning

and we were by nature children under wrath like everyone else

ὁ δὲ θεὸς πλούσιος ὢν ἐν ἐλέει, διὰ τὴν πολλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς, But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he has loved us

καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν even though we were dead in trespasses

C made us alive together with Christ

by grace you have been saved

καὶ συνήγειρεν B and raised us up together

A and seated us together

in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus

ἵνα ἐνδείξηται ἐν τοῖς αἰῶσιν τοῖς ἐπερχομένοις τὸ ὑπερβάλλον πλοῦτος τῆς χάριτος so that in the coming ages he might display the immeasurable riches of his grace

through his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι διὰ πίστεως· καὶ τοῦτο For by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is

not from yourselves; it is God’s gift

οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων, ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται. not from works, so that no one can boast.
αὐτοῦ γάρ ἐσμεν ποίημα, κτισθέντες ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐπὶ ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works

which God prepared ahead of time that we should walk in them.

Διὸ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ποτὲ ὑμεῖς τὰ ἔθνη ἐν σαρκί,So remember that once you were Gentiles in the flesh

those called “the uncircumcised”

by those called “the circumcised”

done in the flesh by human hands.

ὅτι ἦτε τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ χωρὶς Χριστοῦ, At that time you were separate from Christ,

alienated from the citizenship of Israel,

and foreigners to the covenants of promise,

having no hope and without God in the world.

νυνὶ δὲ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ But now in Christ Jesus,

you who once were far away

have been brought near

by the blood of Christ.

αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστιν ἡ εἰρήνη ἡμῶν, For he himself is our peace,

making the two one

and breaking down the dividing wall of partition,

—the hostility, in his flesh,

τὸν νόμον τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐν δόγμασιν καταργήσας, cancelling the law of commands and regulations,

that the two he might create in himself into one new human

making peace.

καὶ ἀποκαταλλάξῃ τοὺς ἀμφοτέρους ἐν ἑνὶ σώματι τῷ θεῷ διὰ τοῦ σταυροῦ and he might reconcile both in one body to God through the cross

having put to death

the hostility by it.

καὶ ἐλθὼν εὐηγγελίσατο And he came and proclaimed

peace to you who were far away

and peace to those who were near.

ὅτι διʼ αὐτοῦ ἔχομεν τὴν προσαγωγὴν οἱ ἀμφότεροι ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

ἄρα οὖν So, then

you are no longer foreigners

and without homes

but fellow citizens with the saints,

and of the household of God,

ἐποικοδομηθέντες ἐπὶ τῷ θεμελίῳ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets

the cornerstone being Christ Jesus himself.

ἐν ᾧ πᾶσα οἰκοδομὴ συναρμολογουμένη In him the whole structure, being fitted together,

is growing into a holy temple in the Lord.

ἐν ᾧ καὶ ὑμεῖς συνοικοδομεῖσθε In him you are also being built together

for the dwelling place for God in the Spirit.

Τούτου χάριν ἐγὼ Παῦλος ὁ δέσμιος τοῦ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῶν ἐθνῶν— For this reason I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles.

εἴ γε ἠκούσατε τὴν οἰκονομίαν τῆς χάριτος τοῦ θεοῦ τῆς δοθείσης μοι εἰς ὑμᾶς· now you’ve heard of the plan of God’s grace that was given to me for you,
κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν ἐγνωρίσθη μοι τὸ μυστήριον, that by revelation the mystery was made known to me,

just as I have briefly written above.

πρὸς ὃ δύνασθε ἀναγινώσκοντες νοῆσαι by which you are able to understand

my insight into the mystery of Christ,

ὃ ἑτέραις γενεαῖς οὐκ ἐγνωρίσθη τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν ἀνθρώπων which in other generations was not made known to humanity

as now it has been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.

εἶναι τὰ ἔθνη συγκληρονόμα καὶ σύσσωμα καὶ συμμέτοχα τῆς ἐπαγγελίας That the Gentiles are heirs together, and sharers together of a body, and sharers together of the promise

in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

οὗ ἐγενήθην διάκονος of which I was made a servant

according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given to me

according to the working of his power.

ἐμοὶ τῷ ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ πάντων ἁγίων ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις αὕτη To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given,

to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,

καὶ φωτίσαι πάντας τίς ἡ οἰκονομία τοῦ μυστηρίου and to enlighten everyone as to what is the plan of the mystery

hidden through the ages in God, who created all things,

ἵνα γνωρισθῇ νῦν ταῖς ἀρχαῖς καὶ ταῖς ἐξουσίαις ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις διὰ τῆς ἐκκλησίας so as to make known now to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places through the church:
ἡ πολυποίκιλος σοφία τοῦ θεοῦ, ¹¹κατὰ πρόθεσιν τῶν αἰώνων the manifold wisdom of God, ¹¹according to the purpose of the ages

which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,

ἐν ᾧ ἔχομεν τὴν παρρησίαν καὶ προσαγωγὴν ἐν πεποιθήσει διὰ τῆς πίστεως αὐτοῦ. in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in him.

διὸ αἰτοῦμαι μὴ ἐγκακεῖν ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσίν μου ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν, ἥτις ἐστὶν δόξα ὑμῶν.So then I emplore you not to lose heart over my sufferings on your behalf, for they are your glory.

Τούτου χάριν κάμπτω τὰ γόνατά μου πρὸς τὸν πατέρα, For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,
wἐξ οὗ πᾶσα πατριὰ ἐν οὐρανοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς ὀνομάζεται, from whom every group in heaven and on earth is named,
ἵνα δῷ ὑμῖν κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ that he may grant you, according to the riches of his glory,

with power to be strengthened, through his Spirit,

in your inner being,

κατοικῆσαι τὸν Χριστὸν διὰ τῆς πίστεως ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν for Christ to dwell, through faith, in your hearts

in love, being rooted and grounded

ἵνα ἐξισχύσητε καταλαβέσθαι σὺν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἁγίοις that you may have strength to comprehend with all the saints

what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

γνῶναί τε τὴν ὑπερβάλλουσαν τῆς γνώσεως ἀγάπην τοῦ Χριστοῦ, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,

that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Τῷ δὲ δυναμένῳ Now to him who has the power

to do all things far more abundantly than we ask or think,

according to the power that works mightily within us,

αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus

throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ ὁ δέσμιος ἐν κυρίῳ I therefore appeal to you, as the prisoner of the Lord

to walk worthy of the calling you’ve been called into

behaviours

μετὰ πάσης ταπεινοφροσύνης καὶ πραΰτητος, with all humility and gentleness,

with patience, bearing with with one another in love,

σπουδάζοντες τηρεῖν τὴν ἑνότητα τοῦ πνεύματος urgently making effort to keep the unity of the Spirit

by the bond of peace

Seven One’s

&
Three Persons

ἓν σῶμα καὶ ἓν πνεῦμα, There is one body and one Spirit

just as you were called into one hope of your calling

εἷς κύριος, μία πίστις, ἓν βάπτισμα· one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
εἷς θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ πάντων, one God and Father of all

who is over all and through all and in all

Ἑνὶ δὲ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Now to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

διὸ λέγει· Therefore it says:

When he ascended on high

he took the captives captive

he gave gifts to [his] people (Ps.68:18)

τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν “He ascended” – what does it mean

but that he had also descended to the lower parts of the earth?

ὁ καταβὰς The one who descended

is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκεν And he himself gave

apostles,

prophets,

evangelists,

shepherds and teachers

πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων for the purpose of equipping the saints

for the work of serving,

for building up the body of Christ

μέχρι καταντήσωμεν οἱ πάντες until we all attain

to the unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God

to one mature adult

to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ

ἵνα μηκέτι ὦμεν νήπιοι, that we should no longer be children

wave-tossed and blown around by every wind of teaching

by the trickery of people,

by craftiness in deceitful schemes

ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ But speaking out the truth in love

we should grow up in every way into him who is the head, Christ

ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα from whom the whole body,

being joined together and held together

by every supporting ligament

from the proper working

of the measure of each individual part

produces the growth of the body

for the building up of itself in love.

Τοῦτο οὖν λέγω This therefore I say

And I insist in the Lord

that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles walk

in the meaninglessness of their thinking

ἐσκοτωμένοι τῇ διανοίᾳ ὄντες, darkened in their understanding

alienated from the life that comes from God

because of the ignorance that is in them,

because of the hardness of their hearts;

οἵτινες ἀπηλγηκότες ἑαυτοὺς παρέδωκαν τῇ ἀσελγείᾳ becoming callous, they gave themselves over to self-indulgence

doing every kind of impurity, and greedy for more

ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἐμάθετε τὸν Χριστόν, But you did not learn Christ this way
εἴ γε αὐτὸν ἠκούσατε καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε, given that him you have heard and in him you were taught:

(since the truth is in Jesus),

ἀποθέσθαι ὑμᾶς κατὰ τὴν προτέραν ἀναστροφὴν τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον to take off the old self, belonging to your former behavior

corrupted by deceptive desires

ἀνανεοῦσθαι δὲ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ νοὸς ὑμῶν, to be renewed by the Spirit in your mind,
καὶ ἐνδύσασθαι τὸν καινὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν κατὰ θεὸν κτισθέντα to put on the new self created after the likeness of God

in righteousness and truthful pure behavior

Διὸ ἀποθέμενοι τὸ ψεῦδος Therefore having put off falsehood

let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbour,

for we are members one of another.

ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε· Be angry and do not sin;

do not let the sun go down on your anger

μηδὲ δίδοτε τόπον τῷ διαβόλῳ. Do not give an opportunity to the devil.
ὁ κλέπτων μηκέτι κλεπτέτω, Let the stealer steal no longer;

rather let him labour, doing honest work with his own hands

that he may have something to share with anyone in need

πᾶς λόγος σαπρὸς ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν μὴ ἐκπορευέσθω, Let no corrupting talk leave your mouths,

but only what is good for building up the person who needs it,

that it may give grace to those who hear.

καὶ μὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον τοῦ θεοῦ, And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,

in whom you were sealed

for the day of redemption.

πᾶσα πικρία καὶ θυμὸς καὶ ὀργὴ καὶ κραυγὴ καὶ βλασφημία ἀρθήτω ἀφ’ ὑμῶν σὺν πάσῃ κακίᾳ. Let all bitterness and rage and anger and shouting and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
γίνεσθε [δὲ] εἰς ἀλλήλους χρηστοί, εὔσπλαγχνοι, χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς Become kind to one another, tenderhearted, showing grace to one another,

just as God in Christ showed grace to you

γίνεσθε οὖν μιμηταὶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ὡς τέκνα ἀγαπητά, Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
καὶ περιπατεῖτε ἐν ἀγάπῃ, καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς And walk in love, just as Christ loved us

and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.

πορνεία δὲ καὶ ἀκαθαρσία πᾶσα ἢ πλεονεξία But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness

must not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints.

καὶ αἰσχρότης καὶ μωρολογία ἢ εὐτραπελία, ἃ οὐκ ἀνῆκεν, Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor giving of sarcastic ridicule, which are out of place,

but instead let there be giving of thanks.

τοῦτο γὰρ ἴστε γινώσκοντες ὅτι For you may be sure of this, that

everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (therefore an idolater),

has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

Μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς ἀπατάτω κενοῖς λόγοις, Let no one deceive you with empty words,

for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

μὴ οὖν γίνεσθε συμμέτοχοι αὐτῶν· Therefore do not become fellow sharers with them;

ἦτε γάρ ποτε σκότος, νῦν δὲ φῶς ἐν κυρίῳ· For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Walk as children of light

– ὁ γὰρ καρπὸς τοῦ φωτὸς ἐν πάσῃ ἀγαθωσύνῃ καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true,
δοκιμάζοντες τί ἐστιν εὐάρεστον τῷ κυρίῳ· discerning what is pleasing to the Lord.
καὶ μὴ συγκοινωνεῖτε τοῖς ἔργοις τοῖς ἀκάρποις τοῦ σκότους, Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness,

but instead expose them.

τὰ γὰρ κρυφῇ γινόμενα ὑπ’ αὐτῶν αἰσχρόν ἐστιν καὶ λέγειν· For the things done in secret by them are shameful even to mention.
τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐλεγχόμενα ὑπὸ τοῦ φωτὸς φανεροῦται, But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes illuminated,
πᾶν γὰρ τὸ φανερούμενον φῶς ἐστιν. for anything that becomes illuminated is light.

Therefore it says:

“Wake up, O sleeper,

and rise up from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

Βλέπετε οὖν ἀκριβῶς πῶς περιπατεῖτε, Watch carefully then how you walk:

not as unwise

but as wise,

ἐξαγοραζόμενοι τὸν καιρόν, ὅτι αἱ ἡμέραι πονηραί εἰσιν. making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
διὰ τοῦτο μὴ γίνεσθε ἄφρονες, So do not be foolish,

but understand

what the will of the Lord is.

καὶ μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ, ἐν ᾧ ἐστιν ἀσωτία, and do not get drunk on wine, for that is wasteful loss,

but be continually filled by the Spirit,

λαλοῦντες speaking

to one another

in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

singing and making music

with your hearts

to the Lord,

εὐχαριστοῦντες giving thanks,

always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

to God the Father

ὑποτασσόμενοι submitting

to one another

out of allegiance to Christ.

Αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ, Wives … to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
ὅτι ἀνήρ ἐστιν κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναικὸς For the husband is the head of the wife

even as Christ is the head of the church,

he is saviour of the body

ἀλλὰ ὡς ἡ ἐκκλησία ὑποτάσσεται τῷ Χριστῷ, But as the church submits to [lifts up] Christ,

so also should wives … to their husbands in everything.

Οἱ ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας, Husbands, love your wives,

as Christ loved the church

and gave himself up for her,

ἵνα αὐτὴν ἁγιάσῃ καθαρίσας τῷ λουτρῷ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐν ῥήματι, that he might make her holy, cleansing her by the washing of water through the word,
ἵνα παραστήσῃ αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ ἔνδοξον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, μὴ ἔχουσαν σπίλον ἢ ῥυτίδα ἤ τι τῶν τοιούτων, that he might present to himself the church, in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,

that she might be holy and without blemish.

οὕτως ὀφείλουσιν [καὶ] οἱ ἄνδρες ἀγαπᾶν τὰς ἑαυτῶν γυναῖκας ὡς τὰ ἑαυτῶν σώματα. In the same way husbands should love their own wives as their own bodies.

He who loves his own wife loves himself.

οὐδεὶς γάρ ποτε τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σάρκα ἐμίσησεν, ἀλλὰ ἐκτρέφει καὶ θάλπει αὐτήν, For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,

just as Christ does the church,

ὅτι μέλη ἐσμὲν τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ. because we are members of his body.
✽ἀντὶ τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος [τὸν] πατέρα καὶ [τὴν] μητέρα “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother

and hold fast to his wife,

and the two shall become one flesh.”

τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν, This mystery is profound,

and I speak with reference to Christ and the church.

πλὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς οἱ καθ’ ἕνα ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα οὕτως ἀγαπάτω ὡς ἑαυτόν, However you, each one of you should so love his own wife as himself,

and the wife should respect her husband.

Τὰ τέκνα, ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν ὑμῶν [ἐν κυρίῳ], τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν δίκαιον. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
✽τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα,✽ ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐντολὴ πρώτη ἐν ἐπαγγελίᾳ, “Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),
✽ἵνα εὖ σοι γένηται καὶ ἔσῃ μακροχρόνιος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.✽ “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Καὶ οἱ πατέρες, μὴ παροργίζετε τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν, Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,

but bring them up in discipline and instruction from the Lord.

Οἱ δοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε τοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect,

in sincerity of heart, as you would Christ,

μὴ κατ’ ὀφθαλμοδουλίαν not just in appearance,

as to impress humans,

but as slaves of Christ,

doing the will of God wholeheartedly,

μετ’ εὐνοίας δουλεύοντες, ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις, serving with enthusiasm, as to the Master and not to man,

εἰδότες ὅτι ἕκαστος, knowing that each person,

if they have done something good,

will receive back from the Master,

whether they are slave or free.

Καὶ οἱ κύριοι, τὰ αὐτὰ ποιεῖτε πρὸς αὐτούς, Masters, behave the same way towards them,

discarding the use of threats,

knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven,

and that there is no partiality with him.

Τοῦ λοιποῦ ἐνδυναμοῦσθε ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ κράτει τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ. Finally, be empowered in the Lord and in his mighty strength.
ἐνδύσασθε τὴν πανοπλίαν τοῦ θεοῦ Put on the full armor of God

that you may have the power to stand against the schemes of the devil.

ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἡ πάλη πρὸς αἷμα καὶ σάρκα, For our struggle is not against blood and flesh

but against the rulers

against the authorities

against the world powers over this darkness

against the evil spiritual beings in the heavenly places.

διὰ τοῦτο ἀναλάβετε τὴν πανοπλίαν τοῦ θεοῦ, Because of this take up the complete armor of God

that you may have the power to withstand on the evil day

and having prepared in every way, to stand.

στῆτε οὖν Stand then

1. by strapping truth around your waist

2. by putting on the breastplate of righteousness

καὶ ὑποδησάμενοι τοὺς πόδας ἐν ἑτοιμασίᾳ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου τῆς εἰρήνης, 3. by putting onto your feet: the readiness to give the gospel of peace.
ἐν πᾶσιν ἀναλαβόντες τὸν θυρεὸν τῆς πίστεως, 4. by taking up, in all situations, the shield of faith

with which you will have power to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one

καὶ τὴν περικεφαλαίαν τοῦ σωτηρίου δέξασθε 5. by receiving the helmet of salvation

6. by taking up the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

διὰ πάσης προσευχῆς καὶ δεήσεως προσευχόμενοι 7. by praying with every prayer and petition

at all times in the Spirit,

watching for this purpose with all perseverance

and making requests for all the saints,

καὶ ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ, ἵνα μοι δοθῇ λόγος and also on behalf of me: that words may be given to me

so that whenever I open my mouth

with boldness I’ll make known the mystery of the gospel

ὑπὲρ οὗ πρεσβεύω ἐν ἁλύσει, ἵνα ἐν αὐτῷ παρρησιάσωμαι ὡς δεῖ με λαλῆσαι. on behalf of which I am an ambassador in chains: that I might be bold, as I should speak.

῾Ίνα δὲ εἰδῆτε καὶ ὑμεῖς τὰ κατ’ ἐμέ, τί πράσσω, So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing,

everything will be told you by Tychicus

the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord.

ὃν ἔπεμψα πρὸς ὑμᾶς εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο Whom I have sent to you for this very purpose,

that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.

Εἰρήνη τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς καὶ ἀγάπη μετὰ πίστεως Peace be to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith,

from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

ἡ χάρις μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἀγαπώντων τὸν κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν ἀφθαρσίᾳ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ, for ever and ever.
